Coronavirus: KADIA processes high-precision parts for ventilators

Medical technology has always been a central field of application for high-precision honing - this is becoming particularly evident these days.

At the Homburg location, KADIA processes linear ball bushings for voice coil motors on a subcontract basis. These electro-mechanical precision actuators control the flow and pressure of breathing gases (air and oxygen) in intensive care ventilators. A failure of these components would be life threatening for the patient.

The quality requirements of the bearings with a diameter of 5 mm are extremely high; diameter tolerance -0,003 mm, cylindricity < 1 µm and a surface finish of Ra < 0.05 µm ensure almost friction-free movement and outstanding control characteristics – for at least 100 million cycles without replacement. KADIA uses a fully automated multi-operation process with the latest honing technology and custom-made honing tool abrasives.

Due to the sharp increase in demand for ventilators in recent weeks, KADIA has continuously expanded its job honing capacities. Currently the team in Homburg produces up to 2,000 linear ball bushings in three shifts every day.
